Great article. Thanks for the insight from a fellow Canadian. Admittedly, I do not know enough about the history and context of this conflict.
I spent hours yesterday trying to understand as much as I could. What I find difficult is that many people have a bias in the debates surrounding the overall issue. Not with respect to this particular attack which I think is terrible any way you look at it (civilians should never be targeted). But in the greater context of the grievances of Palestine and Israel.
Any average person can go on Youtube and watch a 10 minute video from a very passionate speaker than convinces them 100% that Israel has been unfair to Palestine. And then they can watch another 10 minute video that clearly explains why Israel has never been an aggressor and has only ever defended itself.
Depending on which video they finished with, they may be sucked into one side of this issue without fully understanding it.
One thing I know for certain. That we should never glorify the killing of civilians in war. And I do not recognize Canada these last few days.
Thanks so much, Rejean. Many people are asking about the context, and I would be asking too if I did not grow up in Israel. I will soon publish a piece that discusses why these very reasonable and well-intentioned questions can make one vulnerable to manipulation. My full answer to you will be in the form of that post, which I hope to share sometime over the next couple of days. Indeed, as you note, we should never glorify the killing of civilians. Also, October 7 was not simply the killing of civilians in a war between two armies. What the Hamas did was a deliberate attack on civilians for the purpose of murdering, kidnapping, raping and torturing civilians of all ages. When Israel kills civilians, it is generally despite best efforts to not do so and while fighting militants who operate from within civilian areas. This time, the response against the Hamas has to be unrelenting. I hate war, but I fail to see any other way because destructive Hamas leaders have been emboldened to believe that they can operate with few consequences. I recommend this highly disturbing coverage by Ezra Levant: https://www.rebelnews.com/ezra_levant_show_october_10_2023
